The Lottery

The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 2th. but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner....

I can not remember the first time I read this short story by Shirley Jackson, but I will say that it has never left my mind. I can never forget it. I think that is what Ms. Jackson's aim was. For readers of the story to always remember it.
Every so often I'll reread it, sit, and just think about it.

Scots, Mary Queen of

I've started reading a biography of Mary, Queen of Scots by Antonia Fraser.  She is someone I know little about. It is quite a detailed book, I haven't read much of it yet, but I have already learned a lot. I haven't been too interested in her before, but then I saw this video:

If you don't have time to read a biography of her, you must stop what you are doing and watch this video. You will not regret it.
